A Pig's Tale: Pig Named Six Seven Granted Clemency by Miami Dade County Mayor.
While perhaps not at the equivalent scale as granting clemency to holiday birds, but the mayor of Miami-Dade had her own presidential-style act this week by ceremoniously saving the life of a pig named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava carried out the annual tradition at the Cuban-style Latin Cafe 2000 in the center of Miami’s Little Havana neighborhood.
“The swine has done no wrong. She deserves this act of mercy. Her criminal record is spotless,” stated the mayor in a speech with inescapable allusions to the extraordinary and sizable number of executive clemencies issued since the commencement of a new presidential term.
“Except perhaps for eating 6 or 7 apples per day,” the mayor added. “Let this swine have a long and happy life without fear.”
The gathering, either celebrating or rejecting the local cultural practice of feasting on pork during the holidays, was established to replicate the yearly bird sparing at the White House.
The pig, donated by a first responder, was christened after the modern linguistic fad of young people yelling “six-seven” – inspired by a rap song lyric – often for no discernable reason. The craze became so ubiquitous that a major dictionary recently named “6-7” its annual vocabulary selection.
A Future Secured
The pardoned swine is now set to enjoy its days at a rural sanctuary “away from grills and cookware”, according to the ceremony's official statement.
“This swine clemency has become one of our favorite ways to kick off the festive period,” said Eric Castellanos, in a decidedly positive message.
“It captures the spirit of Miami: joyful, varied, and based in heritage that foster togetherness. Annually, we are delighted to mark tradition and kindness in a way only Miami can.”
Participants enjoyed a vegetarian menu of spinach fritters and Cuban coffee as they marked the pig's pardon.
