Are You Able to Solve It? That Overlooked Dutch Invention That Shaped the Contemporary Globe

One can find many candidates to claim the title of “planet’s most significant innovation.” The wheel. The printing press. The steam engine.

According to a recent publication, however, that honor belongs to the mechanised timber mill conceived through Dutchman Corneliszoon van Uitgeest in 1593.

“Prior to automated sawing, building a simple trading ship necessitated around 10 lumberjacks working over three months,” notes the author. “Using wind-powered lumber mills, an identical quantity of processed timber could be manufactured in less than seven days.”

Owing to their rapid automated saw, which converted timber to boards with almost no human effort, Dutch builders could construct ships more quickly compared to anyone else, which sparked one hundred years of Netherlands maritime, economic and artistic dominance across Europe and the globe.

The Original True Industrial Device

Corneliszoon’s sawmill, argues the writer, represented “mankind’s initial authentic industrial apparatus.” A windmill rotated a wheel. A single part transformed the rotary movement to vertical motion to power the cutting blade. A separate mechanism changed that same spinning motion into a sideway’s movement advancing the log toward the blade. A ratchet system moved the wood ahead one precise increment per stroke.

“Each element seemed modest on its own. Corneliszoon’s genius was to combine these parts in order that the machine operated in a perfectly controlled order, sawing on every descending motion while advancing with each return stroke. It was an astonishingly clever application of basic parts.”
