British Designer Antony Price, Renowned for Creating Looks for Iconic Acts Like Bowie and Duran Duran, Dies at 80.
Antony Price, the groundbreaking style architect who crafted a series of unforgettable images associated with artists from David Bowie to Roxy Music and even royalty like Queen Camilla, has died aged 80.
He was celebrated for his defined forms and performative fashion, such as the pastel suits that appeared in rock band Duran Duran's seminal music video for "the song Rio".
"They honored him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' Duran Duran shared a message across their platforms."
His passing follows shortly after he debuted his latest collection in London, which was his first major show in over 30 years. Singer Lily Allen walked in a dress evoking the iconic black velvet "so-called 'revenge dress'" historically worn by Princess Diana.
A Pioneering Career
Born in Yorkshire in 1945, Price headed for London in the early 1960s to attend the renowned Royal College of Art.
Upon completing his studies, he began designing clothing for men at the label Stirling Copper and was responsible for the body-hugging, buttoned trousers that rock legend Mick Jagger famously wore during the band's "Gimme Shelter" tour in 1969.
He established his eponymous line in 1979 and presented his inaugural collection a year later. The show was launched by creations worn by the famed model Jerry Hall, who also wore the marriage dress Price specifically designed for her nuptials with Sir Mick Jagger.
Collaborations with Icons
A long-time collaborator of musical chameleon David Bowie, Price designed the memorable jacket the singer wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His characteristic talent to fuse elements of men's and women's fashion along with his expert craftsmanship in crafting form-fitting garments cemented his status as a "one-of-a-kind talent," as stated by the British Fashion Council.
In the 1990s, he began working on ensembles for Camilla, now Queen Consort, including several ensembles for her US tour after becoming Duchess.
After a career spanning over fifty years, Price presented his final runway show in London just last month in partnership with the fashion brand 16Arlington.
