Emerging Trump Doctrine Points to The Continent's Core Issue: An Alleged Shortfall of Racism?

Throughout his initial presidency, analysts frequently advised that Donald Trump's remarks should be taken seriously rather than literally. Yet, subsequent events indicate that that formula may have reversed the logic.

An emergent U.S. National Security Strategy coupled with multiple comments from U.S. figures, Trump proxies, and the former president have precipitated potentially one of the most profound crises for transatlantic unity, the doctrine that has sustained peace and democracy in Europe since World War II.

From Financial Contributions to Civilizational Fear

While Trump's earlier complaint centered on Europe's perceived refusal to fund its own defense, his vision has now evolved into a significantly more disturbing outlook.

Colored by racism and a staggering contempt for Europe's political institutions and elected leaders, he has spoken about the risk of civilizational erosion on a continent he barely knows and has predominantly viewed from the interior of a luxury vehicle.

From this vantage point, migration from the global south causes a cultural dilution of European countries, rendering them "weak" under "foolish" leadership and setting the stage for their eventual decline. It constitutes an openly racist theory, with the president's allies making clear their support for nationalist political parties across Europe.

While the broader theme of this race-baiting is familiar, its meaning for European security are critically important.

For Trump and his Maga acolytes—including billionaire Elon Musk, who recently advocated for the breakup of the EU—all statecraft is inherently transactional. But, while the previous argument was about financial fairness, the current assertion is that a declining Europe is fundamentally unworthy due to its shift toward multiculturalism.

Weakening from Within

In his interview, Trump himself connects these dots in a kind of wish-fulfillment exercise. He acknowledges that the Kremlin desires a weak Europe. Trump proclaims Europe to be weak, and in exposing the fissures between the transatlantic alliance, he inadvertently aids Putin by further weakening European unity—while simultaneously claiming it's not his "fault".

All of this is unfolding at perhaps the most consequential moment for Europe in decades, with a brutal conflict in Ukraine and rising provocations across the continent.

While Europe draw closer to Kyiv amid continuing warnings of U.S. withdrawal, the danger is that Trump has rationalized a justifying narrative for not listening to European leaders.

The European Response

This situation demands a firm reaction from capitals across Europe. Although certain leaders, including Germany's leader, have been blunt in their pushback, others—like British officials—have opted for a strategy of attempting to appease the U.S. administration.

Recently, a Downing Street spokesperson refused to criticize Trump's comments about Europe or his renewed attack on the mayor of London.

The spokesperson stated, "The Prime Minister enjoys a productive partnership with the American leader and a strong relationship with the London mayor, and is committed to working with both to deliver better outcomes for the people."

The stark reality is that the president intends his words and repeats what he means repeatedly. The time has come to stop pretending otherwise.
