Jets Head Coach Aaron Glenn Confident Kris Boyd Will Make a Full Recovery After NYC Incident
Jets head coach Aaron Glenn mentioned that he recently spoke with cornerback Kris Boyd and feels certain the athlete will recover well after suffering a gunshot wound in midtown Manhattan in the early hours of Sunday.
Glenn described that Boyd, currently in the hospital, was “positive” during their recent conversation.
“That’s what eases my mind, is that he’s feeling positive,” Glenn commented. “His family, they’re in good spirits and he will walk away from this just fine.”
It remained unclear when Boyd could be discharged the hospital, where he has been listed as critical but stable.
“Don’t know just yet,” Glenn remarked. “But I will say this, hearing him speak, he felt really upbeat. Furthermore, that reassures me, because of his outlook and he’s talking that way.”
NYPD released security footage earlier this week of an individual wanted in the shooting of Boyd. The reason behind the incident remains under investigation and authorities said it remains uncertain if Boyd was singled out. No one else was hurt were reported.
The attack took place in the early morning on Sunday about halfway between Madison Square Garden and the bustling tourist spot. Boyd, twenty-nine, was taken to a local hospital after suffering a wound to the stomach, as reported. The assailant escaped.
Glenn mentioned Boyd has been in his thoughts “constantly” since he heard about the shooting. He further stated that Boyd and his spouse recently welcomed a baby.
“My initial concern, he just had a kid,” Glenn noted. “And I’m thinking about his wife, worrying about his newborn and I want to make sure that he’s OK. That was my main concern.
“A certain process is underway, I’ll keep private, but I’m happy at the fact that he’s going to come out of this thing really, really well.”
Boyd hasn’t played in the present campaign, after joining the team, after going on the season-ending injured reserve list on 18 August with a shoulder issue that involved surgical repair.
He signed with New York as an unrestricted free agent in March and was projected as a significant contributor of a revamped special teams unit under the coach and special teams coordinator Chris Banjo. But Boyd was injured during preseason drills on early August and was taken away on a cart.
Boyd has remained around the team during the entire campaign while working his way back.
“He has stayed engaged with the team,” Glenn said. “In fact, he is a regular at our matches. He’s fully engaged. Given his status as a special teams standout, he has been instrumental in guiding others.”
Boyd, hailing from the Lone Star State, began his career with Minnesota after being a seventh-round pick by Minnesota out of the University of Texas in the 2019 draft. He later played for the Arizona Cardinals in last year and moved to Houston’s squad after that. Boyd inked a single-season agreement valued at $1.6 million with the Jets in March.
