New York's next mayor affirms his intention to make his home in the iconic Gracie Mansion
NYC's incoming mayor, Zohran Mamdani, has confirmed to take up residence in the iconic Gracie Mansion, vacating the affordable apartment that sparked debate in his election bid.
A Traditional Abode
Built in 1799, Gracie Mansion has served as the mayoral home for nearly all New York City mayors after the World War II era.
Yet, Mamdani, for whom housing costs is a central platform, was not quick to announce his residency plans promptly after his victory in November.
"This decision was based on our family's safety and the imperative to focusing my full attention on implementing the agenda for affordability New Yorkers voted for," the Mayor-Elect declared on Monday.
A Fond Farewell
Mamdani lived in the Queens borough of Astoria, an area known for its abundance of immigrant populations and culinary diversity.
"To Astoria: thank you for showing us the true spirit of New York City," he noted.
"Even though I'm moving in Astoria, Astoria will forever remain within me and my efforts as mayor," he said.
A Contentious Issue
In his campaign, Mamdani connected his core platform – halting rent increases – to his circumstances as a tenant.
Yet his rivals, most notably ex-governor Andrew Cuomo, challenged Mamdani for living in the apartment despite the fact that he hails from a well-known family.
Previous Exceptions
Some mayors have decided to stay at Gracie Mansion.
Michael Bloomberg, the former mayor, preferred to remain in his private home on the Upper East Side during his time in office, which concluded in 2012.
Rather, Bloomberg said he believed it could serve as a space for public city functions, and championed an extensive renovation of the historic mansion.
A Grand New Home
As he settles into Gracie Mansion near his swearing-in on 1 January, he will find himself in a setting very different than his modest Astoria digs.
With its cream-colored walls, green shutters, and white railings, Gracie Mansion is a wedding cake of a house overlooking the East River.
Inside, the lower floor of the Federal-style mansion is appointed consistent with the home's original era.
The property, which reportedly has five bedrooms, also has increased security measures to protect the mayor and his family.
Ghostly Tales
Some residents have claimed that Gracie Mansion also has supernatural lodgers.
Chirlane McCray, the partner of previous mayor Bill De Blasio, informed the press that they experienced doors opening and shutting on their own, and the floorboards creaked eerily.
Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams was even more convinced. "I don't care what people claim," he insisted in 2022. "The place is haunted in there, man."
The Value of Rent Stabilization
The apartment he is leaving is rent stabilised, a policy where the city regulates on how much building managers can hike the monthly cost each year.
New Yorkers consider these apartments valuable lifelines as the cost of housing outpaces the average income.
Records showed Mamdani his rent was $2,300 each month for his apartment.
Per figures from the property website Zillow, the typical monthly cost for a studio or one-bedroom in New York City is $3,500 a month.
