Nicolas Sarkozy Preparing to Release Prison Memoir Detailing Two Dozen Days In Custody

The ex-president of France plans a memoir this autumn titled Diary of a Prisoner, which recounts his experience endured behind bars.

This news was made shortly after the ex-leader gained freedom as his appeal proceeds the guilty verdict on charges of criminal conspiracy regarding a scheme to acquire presidential race money linked to the leadership of former Libyan leader.

Prison Experience: Solitary Musings

“Inside jail there is nothing to see, and activities are scarce,” he notes in one passage, implying the book centers around his musings from solitary confinement as opposed to extensive analysis regarding the packed and troubled French prison system.

“I forget silence, which doesn’t exist at the prison, where there is endless commotion,” he adds. “The din unfortunately never stops. However, akin to empty spaces, inner life grows stronger behind bars.”

Court Appearance: Sharing the Struggle

At his release request hearing, the former leader participated by video link from inside the facility, describing his time inside as draining. He stated to the judge: “I want to pay tribute to all the prison staff, who are exceptionally humane, and who have made this nightmare tolerable – because it is a nightmare.”

“It never crossed my mind that in my seventies, I would end up incarcerated. It’s an ordeal that has been imposed on me. It’s challenging, I acknowledge, it’s very hard. It affects one all who experience it due to its intensity.”

Historical Context

The former president, who served as France’s president for a five-year term, became the inaugural past president in the European Union and the first leader since WWII from France to experience jail.

Ahead of his incarceration he mentioned he intended to spend the period to compose an account.

Reading Material

It remains unclear did he manage to read and critique the three books he took into prison: a biography of Jesus in two parts together with Dumas’s work The Count of Monte Cristo, where a blameless person ends up incarcerated but escapes to seek vengeance.

Daily Reality

Sarkozy remained in isolation to protect him in a space of about nine sq metres including private facilities in the Paris jail located in the capital. Two bodyguards occupied a neighbouring cell.

It was stated that he consumed solely dairy snacks during his stay due to concerns prison cuisine might have been spat on. Although he had access to prepare his own meals yet he declined, as per accounts. Unclear remains if the memoir includes meals during incarceration.

Lawyer’s Statements

His attorney, who visited his client each day while he was in prison, informed the court he would be safer out of prison rather than in custody. “He received threats against his life, has heard screaming during nighttime plus rapid actions in a neighbouring cell when a prisoner self-harmed.”

Case Background

He entered custody in late October after a French court gave him five years in prison for criminal conspiracy in connection with efforts to secure campaign funds for his presidential bid.

He maintains his innocence challenging the decision, and another court case planned for next spring.
