The English seamer increased the fitness woes of the England squad upon exiting the ground early on day two of the fourth Ashes Test against Australia.
Atkinson experienced discomfort in his left hamstring immediately following a delivery of the fourth over during the morning session.
The touring camp stated Atkinson reported "discomfort" and required time off the field for further assessment "during the day".
The series decider of the series in Sydney starts at the end of the week.
England have previously lost fast bowlers one seamer with a knee problem and another paceman because of a side injury during this series.
Matthew Fisher was added to the party to provide backup.
His form was underwhelming during the first two matches, managing only three wickets.
