The Details Known Concerning the Those Lost of the Bondi Terrorist Incident

No fewer than 16 individuals perished and more than 40 were wounded when gunmen fired on a Hanukah event at Bondi Beach, an attack Australian police are describing as a terrorist attack.

As of the newest reports, authorities have stated the number of fatalities remains at 16, including one of the suspected gunmen. Moreover, 42 wounded individuals were taken to hospital.

The deceased are still awaiting publicly named, but police believe their ages span between 10 and 87 years old.

Here are the individuals who have been identified so far.

Eli Schlanger

London-born clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was initially identified.

Described as a father-of-five, he served as the associate rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Family members and acquaintances remembered him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very kind and sociable person who was dedicated to assisting others”.

“How is it possible that a happy rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, have his life ended in this way?” a relative asked.

Schlanger and his wife celebrated the arrival of their youngest child just a few months ago.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman also lost his life, as stated by his wife.

She told the moments before the attack, saying they had been standing together when the shooting erupted. “He shielded me because he wished to be near me,” she said.

The couple were both survivors of the Holocaust, having endured immense hardship in their youth. They had subsequently relocated to Australia from Ukraine.

Dan Elkayam

French foreign ministry have confirmed that French man Dan Elkayam is a casualty.

Officially, a senior official said that France shared the grief of his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This low act is a fresh and tragic example of a disgusting rise of hatred against Jews that we must put a stop to,” the statement read.

One Child

A young girl, aged 10 who was taken to the Sydney Children’s Hospital is among those who had died, authorities stated.

One Israeli Citizen

A national of Israel was a fatality in the incident, according to reports referencing the Israeli foreign ministry.

Those Injured

From the 42 people taken to hospital, a significant number are still under care, with several in critical condition. Those hurt comprise two officers who attended the scene.

A casualty is a member of the public who attempted to intervene to confront one of the gunmen. Called a hero, he sustained bullet wounds but is expected to recover in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a community leader. It has been reported he was hurt and underwent treatment in hospital.

Communicating, he described the scene as an “absolute bloodbath,” but also praised the actions of those who came to assist. He stated he felt it was a “miracle” he survived.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was also injured in the attack. He described he listened to “a large number” of shots.

“Initially, I believed it was rubber bullets, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he stated. “I sustained a gunshot wound. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
