The Game UN:Me: An Cerebral Thriller That Blends Survival Horror with Among Us Mechanics
The recent Day of the Devs digital showcase revealed a number of intriguing future games, but one especially has captured attention: UN:Me. Developed by Historia and Shueisha Games, this solo experience appears to fuse together the oppressive atmosphere of a Silent Hill title with the paranoid deduction core of Among Us.
"This is a unique game where a young woman harboring several personalities inside her must escape from a labyrinth of the mind," explains developer Yasukazu Kawai.
Entering a Shattered Mind
In UN:Me, players assume the role of an unnamed heroine who appears to be of teenage years. Within her exist four distinct souls, each with their own anxieties and motivations. These souls can seize control spontaneously, releasing their deep-seated terrors upon her without warning.
Based on revealed gameplay, much of the action takes place within a eerie medical facility, though additional clips show the protagonist exploring a desolate chapel.
An Environment of Personal Horror
"What are you fearful of? What causes you uneasy?" poses game director Shun Sasaki. "High places. Confined spaces. People in power. Elements that seem trivial to others can activate something primal inside us. This game explores that idea — fears that are unique to every individual."
The central gameplay loop involves controlling the persona that emerges at any given time. However, these identities will switch against your will as you play. While exploring, every persona's anxieties become exaggerated and assault the girl in succession. As the persona shifts, so does the particular terror the player encounters.
Eerie Visuals and a Deadly Decision
At first glance, UN:Me shares noticeable visual similarities with the Silent Hill series. The hospital is filled with nurses all sporting the identical visage, with unnervingly wide grins. Patients in the lobby have large blooms where their heads should be. Flowers are an ever-present theme, contrasting natural beauty with unnatural horror.
Yet, UN:Me presents a unique mechanic. Players are tasked with deducing which of the four entities haunting the protagonist is the "true" one. "All four personas asserts that the physical form is rightfully them," notes a creator. "Throughout the game, you need to figure out who is authentic."
After a player believes a persona is fake, they are forced to destroy it. However, because every entity can lie or hide the truth, it is incredibly simple to choose incorrectly.
"Maybe you've already eliminated the real [soul] with your own hands," the narration suggests. "The final entity remaining might be a fake. Either way, your choices are irreversible."
UN:Me does not yet have a confirmed release date, but it is can be follow on platforms.
