Vince Gilligan Shares He Has an Idea of How The Apple TV+ Show Might Finish... Currently.
Vince Gilligan never anticipated that the Apple TV+ show would become a massive hit. “The viewers have been incredible,” he states. “It was unexpected the show being as widely discussed as it is, and it makes me overjoyed.”
Now that Season 1 of the popular series reaching its finale—and a second season greenlit and underway—the writers' room reflected on the viewer reception and whether it will shape the narrative path of Pluribus.
On the Incredible Audience Reaction
Anyone might to get swayed by the widespread acclaim and audience predictions surrounding Pluribus. The creator is striving to avoid both.
“It feels like an endless supply of your favorite dessert and being in a state of bliss,” he says. “It's the greatest thing, but I hear about it through word of mouth, and that's by design. Never in my life Googled myself, nor do I ever intend to. It's not a lack of interest. It's a bottomless pit I know I would get lost in and then I'd be living in squalor from the hardware store and I'd be stuck in my living room.”
Regardless of Gilligan’s best intentions, there’s it's impossible to ignore the overwhelmingly positive response to the series. The most practical strategy is to acknowledge it humbly and try not to let it alter the course of the show.
“We don't try to adjust our writing,” says Alison Tatlock. “Our storytelling is not impacted by online forums.”
“We prefer to keep our focus on the work,” Gilligan adds.
The Big Question: Does Vince Gilligan Have a Plan for the Conclusion of Pluribus?
So if the writers are not listening by fan response, does it imply they have mapped out how Pluribus will ultimately end? The answer is yes… in a way.
“There are some potential directions about how the story could conclude,” Gilligan says. “but we are always ready to discard a decent plan for a superior concept. This approach has served us in well on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We throw stuff out when we conceive of something superior and I suspect we'll be doing that.”
On the other hand, if plans fall through, director and writer Gordon Smith has a pretty funny idea to fall back on.
“My recurring proposal is that it's all in a snow globe, and that we'll pull back at the end and the characters are inside it,” Smith jokes, “but no one is buying it.”
Then again, why mess with the iconic TV endings?
“I want Carol to awaken next to Bob Newhart,” he jokes.
Pluribus is streaming now on Apple TV+.
